ONIRO(s), in the earliest Greek mythology, are the three sons of Nyx (Night), conceived without male intervention: Morpheus, the most powerful of the Oniroi, the shaper, who gives form to dreams and assumes the personality of the beings dreamt; Phobetor, the frightener, who takes the shape of any aberrant being, such as beasts and monsters; Phantasos, the apparition, who represents all imaginary objects and landscapes.
In the oracular cults—thanks to the rite of incubation—the Oniroi appeared in dreams and served as intermediaries between the divine will and the faithful.
This exhibition is a tribute to the creative power of dreams and to the disturbing universe of nightmares. Divided into three parts, each representing one of the Oniroi, it is a journey through the illustrations of Nathalie Cohen, which come into contact with the realm of the subconscious imagination, irrational symbolism, and the inexplicable.
